Leading Edge 2004: The Working Biosphere was the sixth in a series of conferences started in 1994. The Niagara Escarpment Commission organizes this biennial environmental conference in association with Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ontario Heritage Foundation to showcase recent or proposed activities for sustainable communities, research, monitoring and conservation on Ontario's Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.

These proceedings include summaries of the conference's two workshops and more than 40 paper presentations exploring the conference's interrelated themes of: communities in action; scientific research, environmental monitoring and conservation projects; and demonstrations of sustainable development.
