Leading Edge 2001: Focus on the Biosphere was the fifth in a series of conferences started in 1994. The Niagara Escarpment Commission organizes this biennial environmental conference to showcase recent or proposed activities for sustainable communities, research, monitoring and conservation on Ontario's Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.

These proceedings include summaries of the three workshops and the conference's keynote speakers. Also included are more than 30 paper presentations exploring the conference's interrelated themes of: communities in action; scientific research, environmental monitoring and conservation projects; and demonstrations of sustainable development.
