Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association

The Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association is a non-profit, community-based organization dedicated to achieving a healthy environment. Established in 2000, it became the first community committee to implement the concepts of UNESCO World Biosphere Reserves along the Niagara Escarpment. The Association promotes a healthy, sustainable community with a balance between local sustainable development and conservation. It strives to build local capacity by providing support for research, monitoring, education and information exchange re-lated to local issues. Administered by a volunteer board of directors, the Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association represents diverse members of the community, including conservationists, business owners, teachers and students and several others. This collaboration among a wide range of community members is the foundation to the Association’s guiding principles, representing all interests in the community to achieve a healthy, vibrant, and sustainable community on the Bruce Peninsula.

A Learning Community Initiative – Dark Sky Committee

For the past ten years there has been a major effort to develop and enhance a variety of programs which seek to preserve  the night sky on the beautiful Bruce Peninsula. There are presently as many reasons for doing this as there are individuals involved in this effort. The Niagara Escarpment Commission acknowledged the Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association and the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula for these efforts in 2010 with a Niagara Escarpment Achievement Award.

The Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association (BPBA) as part of its Learning Community Initiative has formed a Dark sky Committee which has developed a program to actively engage community members.  Building on the past  programs and continuing work of the Bruce Peninsula Environment Group (BPEG), the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula and Bruce National Parks Advisory Committee (PAC), BPTA is seeking community support and funding to implement some important Dark Sky related projects.  With your interest and support it will be a great success.
