In
June of 2002, rehabilitation activities began on Kolapore Creek which
is situated within the Kolapore Uplands in Grey County. This project
is being implemented through a partnership with the ONE Monitoring
Program, the Blue Ridge Sportsmen's Club, and the Ministry of Natural
Resources (Owen Sound District) along with a generous grant from the
Ecological Land Acquisition Program (ELAP).
Historically, Kolapore Creek has been an excellent
brook trout stream with a great deal of sport fish. However, blow
downs and winter storm damage caused the blockage and disruption
of flow in sections of the creek. A number of old beaver dams have
also caused the channel to widen and silt to accumulate. This has
resulted in low flow velocities, channel widening and thermal pollution.
To
redefine the original channel and increase flow velocity, natural
biodegradable coconut logs were placed along the banks in some sections.
Reducing the channel width and increasing the velocity will assist
in regulating the temperature.
In addition, the Ontario Rangers
conducted riparian plantings along the banks to stabilize the stream
channel and lower water temperature.
